The Cops & Robbers Match (also known as Cops & Robbers or Gold Rush) is a capture-the-flag style Multiplayer game. It is the only game mode in Midtown Madness and Midtown Madness 2 exclusive to multiplayer, via LAN or online services such as the MSN Gaming Zone (formally).

The main objective of Cops & Robbers is to find a stash of gold and return it to your hideout, located somewhere in the city. It is very similar to "capture the flag" modes seen in many other games.

Since the game cannot be played alone (the gold hovers above the road, higher than your car when only one player is present), it has a very different set of rules and parameters to other game modes in MM1 and MM2.

All players are either assigned to the "Cops," who drive the Ford Mustang Cruiser or the "Robbers," who drive the Ford Mustang GT.

In the game, players fight for a gold bar that rests unguarded somewhere in the city. The players can fight for the gold to return it to their hideout, or return it to the bank (depending on if you're a cop or a robber). 

Players spawn in random locations around the city before the start of a round. When the round starts, a gold brick appears somewhere in the city, with its position labeled on the map. Players can grab the gold by passing through it, after which the game indicates possession by a symbol above the player.

Other players can then try to grab the gold by colliding with the one holding the gold. If the holder's vehicle is totaled, the gold relocates to a spot close to the wreckage.

Gameplay Settings

Types

• Free-for-all:  Every player is on a different team and any vehicle can be selected. Each player must return the gold to their own, unique hideout, which are positioned at opposite ends of the city.
• Cops vs. Robbers: One team is the cop and the other team is the robber. They gameplay consists of each team finding the gold bar in the city and bringing it to their respective drop-off points (e.g. Bank or Hideout). All the other default vehicles are locked in this mode, and other custom cars also cannot be selected.
• Robber Teams:  Two robber teams try to score points by stealing gold from various parts of city and depositing it to their respective hideouts. It is also possible to snatch gold from a rival team by ramming the opponent.

Limits

• No Limit: No limit, no point limit. Just play 'til you drop.
• Time Limit: The game can last for 5, 10, 20 or 30 minutes.
• Point Limit: Play up to a preset number of points by setting the points in this box. The game will end when a team has reached 100, 250, 500 or 1000 points.

• Red Team: Red Robbers Team

Gold Mass

• Weightless - Picking up the gold will not affect the speed of the player's car.
• Quarter Ton - Picking up the gold will marginally reduce the speed of the player's car.
• Half Ton - Picking up the gold will greatly reduce the speed of the player's car.

Trivia

• In the Classic Madness mod (installed for MM2), players can race with Buick Special Police when HQTM Team's Classic Madness mod is used in MM2, or the "Robbers," who drive the Ford Mustang GT (or Mercedes-Benz 300 SL with Classic Madness installed in MM2.
