The new Ford Mustang! Reborn to run, especially in Chicago!
Chicago Announcer, winning races with the Ford Mustang GT

The Ford Mustang GT is one of the cars unlocked by default in Midtown Madness, along with its sequel, Midtown Madness 2.

It is a fast and durable vehicle that has fair all-around performance scores. It has a police variant in the first two Midtown Madness games known as the Ford Mustang Cruiser and both variants serve as playable vehicles in the multiplayer-exclusive Cops & Robbers Match.

Overview[]

In-Game Description[]

Ford Mustang GT
"The new Ford Mustang GT packs a potent punch with its powerful V-8 engine."

Ford Mustang GT
"A good all around vehicle: quick acceleration and tight handling, solid construction and a tough suspension."

Information[]

The Ford Mustang GT is a starter car and the second-fastest car among the starters, just edging out the Cadillac Eldorado, with its powerful V8 engine. It can also sustain lots of damage. It is available in four colors: Yellow, Green, White, and Red. There is also a police variant: the Ford Mustang Cruiser.

In-game, it is known for having fairly good acceleration, top speed, durability, and handling. This makes it a better choice than faster cars like the Panoz Roadster for long races.

The real-life model it is based on is the 1998-2004 Ford Mustang GT (or specifically, the 1999 model, as chosen for the first two Midtown Madness installments), also known as the "New Edge" Mustang GT.

History[]

800px-1999-04 Ford Mustang coupe

The Ford Mustang has been Ford's pony car since it was released in 1964. The Fastback model was the coupe version of the car sold from 1965-68 before the second facelift, when it was renamed "Sportsroof." The Ford Mustang Fastback featured in Midtown Madness 2 is a 1968 Fastback, built after the first facelift and famed for its appearance in the movie, Bullitt. The second "generation" of Mustang was introduced in 1974, with the new mindset that speed wasn't everything. As a result, sales plummeted, until the release of the third Mustang in 1978. Although its early facelifts are often considered to be the ugliest Mustang ever, it managed to keep in profit until its discontinuation in 1993.

1994 saw the arrival of the fourth-gen Mustang, on which the Ford Mustang GT and Ford Mustang Cruiser are based. The GT model was the performance model of the era, while the Cruiser was the modified police version. The models used in Midtown Madness 2 are from 1999 as they were brought over from the original Midtown Madness 1, although Midtown Madness 2 was released in 2000 and the Ford Mustang Cruiser has completely different paint jobs in it due to different cities featured. They were used promptly after the generation's facelift in '99. The latest generation of the Mustang was introduced in 2005 (inspired by the Ford Mustang GT Concept), and facelifted in 2010. Many variants of the newest Mustang have been ported into Midtown Madness 2 in the form of mods.

Trivia[]

  • This was one of the three player-driven vehicles to be featured in the demo/trial version of Midtown Madness 1, along with the VW New Beetle and the City Bus.
  • Chrome yellow, simply named "Yellow" in the first two Midtown Madness games, was one of the colors that was available for the 1999 model year Mustang GT. In Midtown Madness 2, one of the Cadillac Eldorado's colors is named "Chrome Yellow," even though it is actually a gold color, as seen in the list of available colors/paint jobs for it on Midtown Madness 1's vehicle selection screen. In MM2 Revisited V5, a custom color for the Cadillac Eldorado named "Chrome Yellow" is added, and the default gold color is renamed back to "Gold." The same custom color was also added to the same default Cadillac Eldorado car in MM1 Revisited V3 for Midtown Madness 1 since the Eldorado Touring Coupe was first featured in it.
  • This car model from 1999 uses wheels from the 1994-1998 model of the Ford Mustang.
  • In Midtown Madness 2, the 1999 Ford Mustang GT has new sounds. However, the older sounds from the first game can be reused by modding the second game.
    • The mm2audex.ar file, however, contains higher quality sounds for this car and a different car selection sound. This also applies to the Aston Martin DB7 Vantage.
  • Some faces of the rear window were accidentally assigned to the low level of detail texture for the front of this car in Midtown Madness 2 for unknown reasons. This flaw was patched in the MM2 Revisited mod (V4 or later).
    • Additionally, the white color for this car has the wrong side damage textures in Midtown Madness 2. This was also patched in the MM2 Revisited mod.
  • This is the only vehicle that has two other variants in the first two Midtown Madness games. The police variant is the Ford Mustang Cruiser, and the older, mid 20th century version of the regular vehicle is the 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback.
  • This is one of the only two playable cars in most game styles in Cops and Robbers
